Branded Golf Balls “Invite” Stakeholders to Deeper Conversations, Stronger Relationships, for the Solar Energy Industries Association

Challenge: Building trusted relationships with association members, prospects and stakeholders.
Golf has been a quintessential business development tool ever since the modern form of the game took root in 12th century Scotland. What’s the attraction? A former executive director of the Executive Women’s Golf Association has been quoted as explaining it this way: “There are so many opportunities for emotional connection on the golf course that don’t exist when you are sitting around a conference table or having lunch. Emotion allows people to open up, to connect. Once you’re connected, you can have meaningful discussion and these meaningful discussions lead to good business.”
Something akin to “good business” on the green is what staff at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) seeks. SEIA, being the nation’s leading trade association for the solar energy industry, puts its considerable Washington, D.C.-based muscle into expanding markets, strengthening research and development, removing market barriers and improving education and outreach for solar energy professionals.
Slightly tweaking the “golf as a business development tool” model, the SEIA team uses golf as a relationship-building tool to forge and maintain connections with important members, prospective members, service providers, vendors, industry analysts, journalists and thought leaders. And in a clever use of golf-related promotional products, the SEIA team uses branded golf balls as invitations to the longer, more involved conversations that happen naturally during the game. SEIA representatives offer golf balls along with an invite to the tune of “Let’s play sometime” or “When can we use it?”
And the more relationship-building / golf meetings SEIA staff have with individual members of their audience, the stronger the relationship between them. SEIA ultimately hopes to build trusted connections secure enough that stakeholders and staff both feel comfortable picking up the phone when they need information or to speak frankly on sensitive or hotbed topics.
The challenge was to find the product that would be respected enough on the golf course to actually use, but also fit within the SEIA budget that would allow them to purchase a lot of them.
Solution: SEIA-Branded Callaway® Big Bertha golf balls.
ePromos’ Promotions Specialist Omer Cohen worked with members of the SEIA team, who ultimately chose for their unique “invitations” the Callaway® Big Bertha Golf Balls, a classic packaged and sold by the dozen and pad-printed in two to four colors. The redesigned Big Bertha, with a standard ionomer cover, is designed for distance, features a proprietary core that yields ultra-low compression and has a highly resilient polybutadiene core for a very soft feel. In other words, it is a golf ball of choice among discriminating golfers—the kind courted by the SEIA team.
Result: Stronger relationships, increased brand awareness and goodwill among audiences.
The SEIA team looks forward to reaping the full potential of the “golf invitation” program as they flesh it out over time. But they tell us that they believe it is already working, positively impacting staff-to-stakeholder relationships. Today, members of SEIA staff give “golf ball invitations” to important guests who stop by their office, as well as to key stakeholders they encounter in meetings around the country. The balls not only serve as keys to strong relationships; they also enhance brand awareness as recipients take the SEIA-branded balls back home and use them on their local courses. And because golfers love free golf goodies—one can never have enough golf balls and tees, after all!—recipients also take home with them a positive impression of SEIA as well. That’s an “ace” any day in our book!

July 30, 2009Large, Eco-Friendly Cotton Canvas Tote Joins the Winning Promotional Family of Newsweek International’s Advertising Sales Force
![]()
Challenge: Maintaining and nurturing relationships with important advertising clients.
Beyond higher readership per copy, there’s nothing quite like a satisfied advertiser to please publishers and to keep their advertising sales reps busy, selling and happy. Especially, in these challenging times, advertising sales reps are charged with maintaining and nurturing relationships with important advertisers to ensure the benefit is—and remains—mutual.
Newsweek’s International sales team recognizes the importance of this task: Newsweek, a highly regarded publication, offers comprehensive coverage of world events with a distinguished team of correspondents, reporters and editors covering global affairs, business, science, technology, society, arts, entertainment and travel. Written for a global, sophisticated reader, Newsweek reaches a worldwide audience of 19 million affluent and educated consumers—targeted by advertisers and their agencies alike.
Newsweek’s International sales force has long used high-quality, branded promotional products in their advertiser retention efforts, with “quality” being a key word. The Newsweek team demands quality promotional products to show their appreciation for the valuable time of their mostly high-level clients, as well as to suitably reflect the sophisticated Newsweek brand. The teams’ experience tells them that their clients prefer and appreciate quality gifts, which also makes them more amenable to future meetings.
For a recent gift restocking, the Newsweek International team turned to ePromos’ Account Executive Stephanie Kraut for ideas for new products and to reorder old favorites, including Newsweek-branded totes, umbrellas and golf balls.
Solution: Add a new, “green” tote to an already winning lineup of golf balls and umbrellas.
For the newest addition to their promotional family, the team had already decided that they wanted to follow the spirit of the times by selecting a green, eco-friendly product. One of the products Stephanie showed the team—an environmentally friendly tote she successfully suggested for another client — turned out to be the right product for them: the Recycled Cotton Rope Tote. This roomy, stylish tote is made from 15-ounces of recycled, biodegradable cotton canvas, perfect for shopping, the gym or the beach. Its size—18” w x 14” h x 9.5” d—provides a large branding canvas—4.5” w x 2” h—onto which your logo and message can be screen-printed. This natural-colored tote also comes in your choice of navy or black sewn-in highlights.
The team also replenished two client favorites:
- The Windproof Edge Two-Tone Automatic Umbrella, with a large 46-inch arc of pongee, a soft, thin woven cloth, available in black with your choice of edge accent color: fuchsia, gray, lime green, orange, red or royal blue. The large arc also provides a large branding space—up to 4” w x 4.5” h on one panel—to maximize visibility for your brand. Newsweek International sales reps had previously reported that recipients preferred this umbrella to a smaller, pocket version, likely because it provides greater coverage and rain/wind protection.
- Titleist® DT Roll Golf Balls, particularly popular in Newsweek’s offices in Great Britain and Japan, combine soft and resilient core technology with a lower-trajectory 392 dimple design for longer distance flight and greater roll. These balls may be pad printed on one or both sides.
Result: Stylish, practical canvas tote impresses the ladies; ePromos’ process impresses team Newsweek.
Team Newsweek International reports ongoing promotional success: the golf balls continue to help reps score a “hole in one” with advertisers; the umbrellas continue to please clients as well. The team also tells us that the canvas totes were a hit with women, who loved their natural look, practicality and, especially, ideal size, which itself sets the bags apart from traditional totes. Our contact at Newsweek is also pleased with Stephanie’s work, commenting that she is “…always a big help in the search. After letting her know what we need the promos for, she comes up with several ideas and sends pictures and details. The entire process is always straightforward, unproblematic and quick”—just the result Stephanie and everyone at ePromos aim for!

October 16, 2008Leather Travel Wallet and Valuables Pouch Thank Donors at the Bixby Pro-Am Golf Tournament

Objective: To find high quality promotional products easy on logistics yet attractive to donors
Charity golf tournaments top the minds of non-profit fundraisers for good reason: tournaments help charities identify new donors, garner lots of press and—if managed well—raise significant dollars. The Bixby Community Health Foundation directs charitable contributions on behalf of Bixby Medical Center in Adrian, Michigan, 30 miles southwest of Ann Arbor. One of the Foundation’s most popular fundraisers is the Bixby Pro-Am Golf Tournament, this year marking its 21st season. Because the annual tournament is so important to Bixby Medical Center, each year tournament organizers give participants a memorable gift to thank them for their generosity.
Solution: American Classic leather gifts by the upscale Cutter & Buck
This year, Team Bixby turned to ePromos with an idea for promotional picnic tables—gifts of substance sure to please the tournament’s generous participants, sponsors and donors. However, after consideration and reviewing many promotional product samples suggested by ePromos, the Bixby team changed direction, instead selecting two smaller, yet still high quality items: a leather travel wallet and leather valuables pouch. The smaller products would not only make logistics easier, but they’d also more closely match the refined air surrounding the prestigious event.
Both products would be debossed with the tournament and hospital system logos; both would also carry the name of Cutter & Buck, a clothier known for its upscale golf and other sports apparel. In addition:
- The American Classic travel wallet, crafted of genuine top grain leather and lined with Cutter & Buck’s signature lining, closes with a front buckle and features an interior organizer and a hidden pen loop.
- The American Classic valuables pouch—also of top grain leather and lined with the firm’s signature lining—provides roomy interior storage for golf accessories, as well as a rear, zippered compartment large enough for three golf balls.
ePromos’ art department proved helpful during the Bixby campaign, as the original tournament logo was finely detailed. Small details reproduce well when imprinting a logo on a large product—like a picnic table. But when reproduced on smaller items, like the travel wallet and valuables pouch, much of the detail would be lost. Thanks to our talented designers, the Bixby tournament logo was adjusted to fit the newly chosen gifts.
Result: Happy donors, happy golf tournament fundraisers
In the end, the tournament and the promotion were great successes. The products looked great, donors were pleased, and the Foundation reached its fundraising goals.

September 30, 2008Branded, Multi-use Divot Repair Tool Helps Drive Tradeshow Booth Traffic For Tradeshow Favorite NAVTEQ

Challenge: To identify a tradeshow giveaway with high perceived value for favored customers and qualified leads
One marketing strategy—more than any other—presents incredible opportunities to promote products old and new, to fill the funnel with qualified leads and to increase brand visibility. That strategy: the tradeshow. According to the Incomm Center for Trade Show Research and Sales Training, up to 60 percent of booth visitors are part of decision-making teams—80 percent of which make decisions about products and providers while at the show. Also, according to Incomm, 52 percent of show attendees are more likely to stop by your exhibit if you offer samples and giveaways.
The tradeshow strategy is an ongoing effort for NAVTEQ, a leading provider of comprehensive digital map information for automotive navigation systems, mobile navigation systems, Internet-based mapping applications, as well as government and business solutions. With more than 3,800 employees in 194 offices in 42 countries around the world, NAVTEQ is a regular at highly attended industry-specific national and international tradeshows, including the Oracle Openworld in San Francisco, ExpoComm in Buenos Aires, GITEX in Dubai, the Mobile Asia Congress in China and SITL in Paris.
For one of its recent upcoming shows, the NAVTEQ team tapped the tradeshow-know-how of ePromos Promotions Specialist Valerie Bogucharova for help in identifying and selecting a unique, high quality product that would drive booth traffic—and thus leads and sales. The team wanted a promotional product with high perceived value to impress current customers and qualified leads, as well as with an upscale appearance in keeping with the firm’s image and brand.
Solution: Aluminum divot repair multi-tool to extend promotional reach
Their selection: an imprinted, aluminum divot repair multi-tool in NAVTEQ’s corporate blue complete with ball marker, knife, nail file, screwdriver and divot fixer. Being a multi-tool extends the use of a typical on-course-only golf companion to that of an on-the-go, anytime-anywhere pocket companion. And where companion goes—the NAVTEQ names goes as well.
Result: Tradeshow success—many new people met, many great impressions left
The NAVTEQ team reports tradeshow success: gift recipients were duly impressed with the high quality giveaway, helping to drive high, steady booth traffic throughout the event. The team thanks the divot tool as an indispensible part of their show success, crediting the promotion for many opportunities to meet and speak with prospects and customers alike.

June 26, 2008Golf-themed Promotional Giveaways Drive Tournament Donations for the Mission Viejo High School Diablos Football Team

Challenge: To find interest-generating, golf-related promotional products for tournament giveaways.
Need to raise money, awareness and publicity fast? Consider the golf tournament, a fundraiser that promises to quickly generate significant revenue and community awareness over traditional fundraising alternatives typically held over weeks or months. The Mission Viejo High School Diablos football team experienced their first tournament-fundraiser success last year: thus this year’s 2nd Annual Diablo Classic Golf Tournament, a day of golf on what’s known as one of the finest courses in California’s South Orange County, plus lunch, dinner and opportunities to win hole-in-one prizes and on-course contests—not to mention opportunities to receive free Diablos’-branded, golf-related promotional gifts. Funds raised in the 2nd Annual event would pay for new training and safety equipment, skills development and facilities improvements.
Solution: A branded golfer’s gift-pack including shoe bag, divot fixer and tee pouch.
And because no golf tournament is complete without “thank you” gifts that encourage golfers to golf and donors to donate, members of the Diablos’ tournament planning team contacted ePromos in search of appropriate giveaway promotional products. The team, working with Promotions Specialist Brent Mittleman, selected several promotional products that together, once branded, made for a perfect Diablos’ golf package:
• A promotional shoe bag with padding, vents and an exterior zippered pocket
• A handsome logoed divot fixer
• And a logoed tee pouch with a club-shaped zipper pull, ready to affix to a golf bag and large enough to hold tees for a full round of play
Result: Diablos exceed fundraising expectations and stay on golfers’ minds year-round.
The fundraising team tells us that tournament participants and donors alike enjoyed the promotional, branded gifts, which helps keep the Diablos’ top-of-mind even after football season ends. The team also reports that the tournament itself was reason for cheer, as the team exceeded their fundraising expectations, raising enough money to cover the season’s expenses—and then some.

November 15, 2007Golf Tournament Goodie Bags Thank Generous Donors, Enhance Charity Event
Challenge: The ERS Foundation Seeks to Express a Warm, Hearty "Thank you" to Charity Golf Tournament Participants
If you're charged with raising funds for a non-profit, then you know what's involved in the planning and hosting of fundraising events—and that many times the success or failure of those efforts directly impact your organization's ability to secure the funds it needs to accomplish its goals. You also likely know that when you uncover fundraising success, it's important to maintain it for as long as you can!
ePromos is a close ally and friend of the Emmory Reagan Shapses (ERS) Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to the research, treatment and ultimate cure of tuberous sclerosis, a rare genetic disease that often causes sufferers and their families to live under the daily threat of seizures, tumors, organ failure, mental disability or worse.
The Foundation's premier annual charity golf tournament is considered fundraising gold: the event, with its $500 to $10,000 dinner and player sponsorships, has so far contributed more than $3 million towards the research and treatment of tuberous sclerosis. The all-day affair includes breakfast, 18 holes, cocktails and a lavish dinner, as well as auctions, raffles and contests—like the chance for participants to win a luxury car or $1 million for a hole-in-one. Because the event is so important to the ERS Foundation, its members decided this year to give something memorable back to participants to thank them for their generosity.
Solution: "Welcome" Backpacks Stuffed with Branded Golf Goodies Start the Day Off Right
The Foundation drew upon its ties with ePromos to help conceive just the right tournament gift—a "welcome" drawstring backpack jam-packed with golf-themed items guests could use during the day’s activities. Among the goodies: sun block, golf balls, binoculars, a water bottle and a cap—all branded with the foundation’s logo to build a sense of community among participants during the day while reminding them of the event—and the foundation—for many tomorrows.
Result: This Year's Tournament and Promotion Score Big; Plans for Next Year Are Underway
Tournament participants raised $900,000 during this year's tournament, all for the research, treatment and eventual cure of tuberous sclerosis. We're told that the goody bags were a big hit with the golfers; and the ERS Foundation is already dreaming of ways to top this year's success.
